Most of these historic lights guided mariners on the Great Lakes. The lone exception, at Crown Point, is named for Samuel de Champlain, the French explorer who first reached the lake that bears his name in 1609. Dunkirk and Ashtabula were major commercial ports on Lake Erie, while Vermilion rivaled Cleveland in the 1830's as Ohio's foremost Great Lakes city. It is famous for the great number of ships' captains who lived there, and many of their fine homes still stand in the historic town. Whitefish Point stands guard near one of the most treacherous and stormiest areas of Lake Superior. An adjacent shipwreck museum recounts some of the disasters that befell sailors there. Remote Rock Harbor Light, on roadless Isle Royale, can be reached only by foot. Split Rock is famed for its spectacular site, high atop a Lake Superior bluff that has been cleft down the middle. Cana Island is on Wisconsin's beautiful Door Peninsula and Presque Isle preserves the living quarters of a lightkeeper's family of the 1870's. The Huron Lightship was a floating beacon that marked the entrance to the St. Clair River after 1920.
