Regent, ND
If the media's dire depopulation predictions are true, North Dakota will soon have less residents than giant concrete and metal creatures. Spunky North Dakotans say "BITE ME!" to out-of-touch urban doomsayers, with their weepy laments of prairie beauty. The state's weak tourist magnetism is a fixable problem. There's no better example of ND-can-do spirit than the Enchanted Highway, a 32-mile stretch of paved county highway between Regent and Gladstone, reaching I-94.

If you build it, they will come ...

Local artisans plan to create ten giant sculptures, one every few miles, paired with picnic areas and playground equipment. Metal sculptor and retired school teacher Gary Greff started the work in 1992. There's a depiction of Teddy Roosevelt riding a bucking horse (3 miles north of Regent) and a Tin Family (1.5 miles north), which includes a propeller-headed boy holding a sucker.

A covey of pheasants (9 miles north) was completed in fall of 1998. The rooster is 60 feet long, and the hen 50 feet. Three 12-foot high chicks complete the scene.

The World's Largest Grasshopper went up in Spring 1999.

Six more sculptures are planned, including a flock of geese, two deer, a giant fish leaping from a scrap metal pond, and a 70-foot tall buffalo. Gary also hopes to add a water park, restaurant, and amphitheater. His excess metal sculpting energies are evident in his own neighborhood, where trees with metal leaves seemingly bloom.

Each new construction on the Enchanted Highway is a struggle for Gary and his believers, who scrape together individual donations of money and material. But as critical mass is achieved, we expect roadtrippers and their vacation dollars will veer north to nearby I-94 rather than the traditional I-90 east-west crossing through South Dakota.
