These are not your 4 stars eating places. The New Yorker has not rated them.
They are the old, great 1 plus 3 places to eat. What is 1 plus 3? Great
little out of the way places, where you can still get one meat and 3 vegetables for under
$5-- and in some cases for even less. These are also some of the best buffets
to be found anywhere. Obviously missing from this list, with just a few exceptions,
are the great BBQ spots of the South. They are for another adventure. So check
out the list. Take an extra cholesterol pill, leave the Visa Card at home and head
out. You are about to eat your way through the South!
And one other tidbit to look for. Should you find a diner with 4 calendars of
different years, hanging on the worn walls, settle back. You have just found the
rarest of all places--"A four calendar - 1 plus 3"!
