Hollywood - Mann's Chinese Theater - The Ghost of actor Victor Killian, roams the sidewalk here, looking for the man who murdered him.  According to Police reports, Killian met a man at a nearby bar in 1982. After a few drinks, Killian invited the man back up to his apartment. Killian's bludgeoned corpse was discovered the next morning. The killer has never been found.

Ventura - Bella Maggiore Hotel - Ghost of a  prostitute who committed suicide haunts Room 14 - soft singing, strong smell of roses inside room and in adjacent hall, occasional mist near window.

San Jose - Winchester House - It is a house that was owned by Winchester's wife, after her daughter and her husband died, a medium told her to move out west (she was living in Boston, MA), and to continue to build onto this ranch house in San Jose, California, to keep away the evil spirits of those who were killed by Winchester's guns.  At one time the house had some 300 rooms, until it was partially destroyed and closed off after an earthquake.  There are groups of 13 things in many of the rooms (windows, coat hooks, etc.) , stairs leading into the ceiling, and a door to nowhere, just to name a few.  wild place!  She died in the house, but was buried in New Haven, Connecticut.

Calabasas - Leonis Adobe - an old house/ranch from the1800's is said to be haunted by the original owner/builder of the house.

Colton - Agua Mansa Cemetery - Supposedly haunted by the ghost of a woman searching for her children.

Los Angeles - Los Angeles Pet Cemetery - This is where many Hollywood stars bury their pets. The Little Rascal's dog Petey, Hopalong Cassidy's Horse and Mary Pickford's dog are all interred here. However, the dead animal that does the most haunting here is Kabar, a Great Dane that belonged to Rudolf Valentino.  The dog died in 1929 but it's playful phantom is still reported panting or licking people that wander near it's grave.

Hollywood -  The Comedy Store - Was once a famous nightclub and restaurant in the 30's/40's and the basement is said to be haunted with an evil entity.

Sunnyvale - Toys R Us - Toys R Us is haunted supposedly by a young boy or man.  Sylvia Brown appeared on National television and did a "walk through" at this "haunted Toys R Us."  Apparently the activity is just as strong today as always, and employees can attest to finding toys in aisles when opening up the store in the morning, and balls rolling down aisles when nobody else is around.  There also have been pictures taken of this ghost.

Geyserville - Warm Springs Fish Hatchery - It was supposedly built on Native American burial grounds. The main building was haunted by a ghost(woman) who called the employees names and changed the radio station. There were also four houses there which each had their own encounters with ghosts. The shower came on all times day or night in one house and it happened to more than one resident of the house. One of the other houses reportedly had a spirit of a child that climbed in the bed with you. Some visitors to the hatchery claimed to have seen an elderly Indian couple roaming the grounds. I had a number of my own experiences to it was pretty wild.

Orange - Olive Hotel -   There are several ghosts and ghost stories. The one that sticks out is the one about ( the ghost in the closet)  People have rented this room and opened a closet door only to find a mans body hanging by the neck.  This is a man who committed suicide more than 50 years ago .

Santa Clarita - Hart Mansion - The home of the silent film star Willaim S. Hart.   Mr. Hart is scene by people that he recognizes and likes (namely  docents).  He and his sister (also a ghost) are the only people  to have ever really lived in the home.  The ghost of their nurse  as well as Mr. Harts dogs are also seen.  Coffee is often   smelled in the museum.

South Pasadena - Penthouse Apartments - The ghost of a WWII soldier  is still trying to get a message to his son.

Hollywood - Roosevelt Hotel - A stop at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a must, as at least two famous, and several not so famous ghosts reside there. The hotel's most famous haunting concerns a mirror which sits outside the elevators on the hotel's lower level. Hundreds of tourists pass the full length mirror each day without knowing its strange history. The mirror originally was part of the furnishings in a room which was frequently used by Marilyn Monroe. Several people have reported seeing the tragic actress' image reflected in the glass of this particular mirror. Upon turning around, of course, no one was there.

Westwood - Westwood Memorial Cemetery - Marilyn Monroe's ghost has been spotted hovering near her tomb.

San Jose - Chuck-e-Cheese - haunted by a little girl  on the third floor.

Santa Clara  - Paramont's Great America -  The ghost of a ten year old boy who was killed on an amusement park ride haunts the area where the ride once stood.

Beverly Hills - Pickfair Mansion - This was the home of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. I had friends who owned the place for several years and have had the experience of seeing the ghost of a maid who was accidentally shot in the maids quarters. According to the previous owners, there were at least two other ghosts who haunted the place as well. In the beautiful entry way with it's hand painted murals on the wall was often seen a ghost who was thought to be Douglas Fairbanks.  It is my understanding that when they sold the place, the new owner tore much of the original home down and rebuilt on a different site on the property.

San Francisco - San Francisco Arts Institute - Supposedly built on a cemetery in the early 1900 after an earthquake, it is haunted by a few restless spirits.

Hollywood - Wattles Mansion -  There used to be a bus stop right in front of the property, but it had to be moved because there were too many complaints of screaming, and mysterious sounds of horses galloping and whinnying all night long. People grew too afraid to wait for the bus and the city finally complied and moved it down the block.  An apparition of a woman has also been seen on the grounds at night by neighbors.

Sunnyvale - Homestead High School - is said to have a ghost walking the halls on the second floor.  I've heard stories from many people including a teacher who worked there.  Usually the spirit is only seen at night.  It's been known to lock doors, open doors and it's presence can be felt.  People have also said that they've seen it, and one teacher claims that the ghost tapped him on his shoulder.

Thousand Oaks - The Stagecoach Inn - It is supposedly haunted by a man that was murdered there and also by a woman.  Perfume can be smelled in parts of the Inn (which is
now a museum open to the public) and people have reported seeing "a tall stranger" in the corner of their eyes, but turn around to see no one.

Long Beach - The Queen Mary - It is said that a male ghost has been seen in the engine room where he was killed while the ship was still in service, there have also been reports of the sound of children playing in the pool. The most accessible haunted area is near door 13 in the engine room, where a young man was crushed trying to escape a fire. He was only 17 and had lied about his age in order to get the job.  Another of the accessible haunting areas is the front desk of what is now the hotel portion of the ship. Sightings include a mysterious woman in white who will be sighted walking until blocked from view by a pillar and never coming out from behind. Also, a couple has been seen walking down the hall to either side of the main entry to the first class rooms, but are never seen in the hallways themselves.  More info here

San Diego - NAS Miramar - Hangar 1 is haunted by the crew of a F-8 Crusader that crashed there in the late 60's.

Hollywood - Laurel Canyon - There have been numerous reports over the years regarding an intersection on Laurel Canyon. This is a canyon road transiting from Hollywood, CA and the San Fernando Valley. According to the reports, on several occasions at the intersection of Laurel Canyon and Lookout Mountain Dr. almost on the exact moment of midnight people have witnessed an old carriage pulled by white horses that seems to dart out onto the canyon road from Lookout Mountain as though the horses are at a full speed gallop. The carriage dissappears into the same nothingness from whence it came leaving even car accidents in its wake. Just down the road from this intersection lies the burned out ruins of what was Houdini's mansion. This entire area is frought with stories of hauntings and ghosts. It is a beautiful canyon drive with shade trees drooping over the road almost the entire way and it is filled with old mansions from Hollywood's early days. The old home of Tom Mix is there too.

Yorba Linda - The Yorba Family Cemetary -  is haunted by "The Pink Lady." The origin of the pink lady is somewhat a mystery, but she appears on the night of June 15 every other year. On these occasions, curious locals can often be found keeping watch around the cemetary, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.

Ventura - The Olivas Adobe   - is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a woman.  She is reported to be seen standing in an upstairs window at night.

Disneyland - The ghost of a woman named Dolly haunts the Matterhorn Mountain where
she was crushed to death after she fell out of her sled and was hit by the sled behind her.   There is a ghost of a young man haunting the old PeopleMover ride. When it was operating, girls (especially those with long blonde hair) would sometimes feel an unseen someone pull visiously at thier hair. The boy died a few years ago on a Grad Night when he jumped out of the cabin of the PeopleMover, tripped,  got caught and dragged underneath the car. He grabbed desprately at his girlfriends long blond hair to save himself, but to no avail.   The ghost(s) of one or two people have been seen on Tom Sawyers Island.   At least three boys (all Grad night victims) have drown in the Rivers of America.   The "it's a small world" ride has three different ghosts. They are all people who worked there and they loved this attraction. Lights have turned themselves off/on by themselves, as well as the all the dolls moving without power.

Oakland - The Pardee Home -  located in California's Preservation Park Historic District.  This house was home to California's Governor (George Pardee 1903-1907).Pictures showing orb's have been taken, but no naked eye sightings.  The rest of the park is also haunted with orb's having been photographed.  Pictures coming soon in the gallery courtesy of Tim Dennehy ("Spectre" Ghost Hunting Society)

San Francisco - Alcatraz - is said to be haunted by the ghosts of many, many prisoners who died there, including the Bird Man, "Machine Gun" Kelly and Al Capone. Voices in the former eating area as well as the cell  blocks are heard when no one else is around.   Footsteps and the sounds  of cell doors opening and closing also echo throughout the corridors.   People have reported feeling "cold spots" in certain areas and the  feeling that they are not alone, even when they are.

Bakersfield - Bakersfield High School - One area of the bleachers at the BHS football area is haunted by a young couple, they look to be 16 to 18 years old. The girl is wearing a prom dress and the guy is wearing a football jacket with "BHS" imbroidered on the back. The area where they are seen has a strange chill to it, and one gets a stange feeling of being watched. Where they are seen is up near the top of the bleachers. The couple has yet to be indentified, and no one knows how they got there. They are usually seen during big games, either sitting there watching the game contently or making out (as a couple would most likely do).

Bakersfield - Garces Circle - One of the only circles in California, Garces Circle has a large stone statue of Father Garces, a missionary who was in the area a few hundred years ago. People have reported that right before a major car accident at the circle (there's been quite a few) people can either see the hands of the statue moving or they hear him muttering in prayer for them.

Bakersfield - Meledroma Theater - This rather popular theater is an old building, built quite a while ago.  Before it became the theater it was a big toy store. The theater is said to be haunted by an employee who worked at the toy store who hung himself in the attic. Unexplainable things happen at the Meladroma where the attic used to be (the attic was removed and replaced with all the things a theater needs). Also, the women's dressing room seems to have stange occurences: the seaquin dresses on the clothesracks  "rattle" on their own violation, and shadows can be seen where no one is standing.

Bakersfield - The Bakersfield Californian Newspaper Building - This old building is haunted by a few ghosts (one of whom I've had the pleasure of actually seeing..well..hearing, actually). One of them is a German Sheperd Dog who can be seen, waiting patiently for his master to come and pick him up. Another is an old security guard who can sometimes be seen in the lunch room. Finally, the former editor of the Californian can be sometimes (though rarely) seen walking through the hallways of the building.

She was married and didn't want to tell her husband but when she did, he left her. After that, she waited for the return of the salesman even though he never returned. She, in despair,   hung herself in the attic. Now it is said that you can see her apparition looking out the window waiting for her lover to return for her.

Banta (Tracy) - The Banta Inn -  Haunted by the former owner who died of a heart attack behind the bar in 1967. He likes to knock things off walls, stack the coins inside the cash register, open and close doors. The Banta Inn has appeared on the TV show "Sightings".

Modesto - Modesto High School - The spirit of a young man paces the balcony of the Modesto High Auditorium.   Supposedly quite a few years ago, a young man had fallen from the balcony railing to the carpet-covered cement ramp below and was killed.  There are also reports of knocking noises heard in the main hallway---where the floor slopes by the sewing room---that are coming from the tunnels that used to run under the school.

Palmdale - Haunted Ponds -   There's a place next to the California Aquaduct and 40th & 30th st East where a house used to be, around 40 years ago. legend has it that the woman that lived in the   house was hung on a tree branch over a pond on the property by her jealous husband. It is said  that on clear nights when the moon is bright you can see her hang from the tree & hear the sound of a woman weeping.

Sanger - Centerville - Snake Road - The street is called Channel, the twisting curves in the road have caused it to become known as "Snake Road." On top of that, it is close to a fast flowing river, Kings River.  Apparently, many years ago, a woman was driving down Snake Road with her two daughters when she lost control of her car and drove off the the road crashing into the river. Trapped inside the car, she drowned. The two girls were tossed from the car and went down the river with the strong current. Not strong enough to swim to safety, they also drowned. But, they drowned several miles down the river. Therefore, every night, the mother's ghost can, on occasion, be seen walking along Snake Road, searching for her daughters. !Even calling out to them.

San Jose.    Notre Dame highschool in San Jose Ca has been haunted for years. Its been
around since the mid 1800s and several of my friends have seen ghosts
upstairs where the old nuns used to live. If you were to go up to the third
floor there is a room called of course the "green room" that has the most
activity. you can hear spirits evryonce in a while that sing becasue thats
what the nuns used to do and the school is built from a mansion that was
once an orphanage. Everyonce in a while a little boy is seen in what is now
the teacher's lounge and he runs around the school at night, teachers and
studetns who have been working late have seen them. I graduated last year
but when I attended several times people have told me that they have gone up
to the "third floor" and to the "green room" and have come back down feeling
like there was something there. Also one of the teachers found the little
boy sitting in her chair and when she said hello not even thinking that he
could possibly be a ghost he suddenly disapeered. He's usually dressed in
old fashioned clothes. They don't know how he died but he was really young
around 6/7. The nuns died of old age becasue it used to be ran by the
sisters of Notre Dame and they were also the teachers so they lived there
24/7.

South Pasadena - The Rialto Theater -  The Rialto Theater is VERY old, I think 70 years old. Many people have died there. Pasadena - The Historic State Landmark Theater - Was once a College of the Performing Arts, and it has been reputedly haunted by the benevolent spirit of its founder, Gilmore Brown.  Long after his death, and when the
college was still operating; the elevator in the classroom tower building would often stop without command on the floor where Mr. Brown's office was located.  Many actors and technicians have felt a spirit watching the proceedings and one evening.

Moss Beach - The Moss Beach Distillery - Unusually shaped building is the current home of the "Blue Lady". Building used to be a speak- easy during the prohibition.  A woman who worked at the establishment was married to a seaman, but had an affair with a piano player. When the husband returned from Alaska and found out, he then murdered her on the beach below. The Blue Lady is a friendly and mischievous spirit.

Grass Valley - North Star Mine Lodge -  Was converted into a Christian boarding school in the 1960's.   It was shut down in the mid 80's.  Doors opened and closed by themselves drastic temperature changes pictures flew off walls windows opening and shutting these events were witnessed by quite a few of the other students often by groups of us at one time the temperature changes and things flying off the walls seem to occur at the same time.

San Francisco - Golden Gate Park -   There's a police officer ghost that roams Golden Gate Park.  People will get pulled over and get speeding tickets by this guy, but when they go to file it through the courts they'll find out that the officer listed doesn't exist.  He's been dead for 10 years.  Anyway, the story goes that if a cop in the park is trailing you, you need to go outside of the park first before you pull over.  And once you do, the ghost cop will disappear.

Alameda-Washington Elementary School
This school has a young boy about 13 years old walking the halls at night. When the school was being rebuilt a few sections of the floor were missing and a boy went walking through and fell. It was deep and dark so he couldn't get out and the workers couldn't see him. They filled the hole with cement leaving a draining hole with which he breathed from. But sadly later they filled in the hole. His spirit roams around room 13 and when people are alone in there they get cold chills, hear knocking and scratching when no one was around.

Anaheim-Anaheim High School
There's a bomb shelter under the school from World War 2. You could here constant banging on the old locked steel door on certain nights usually after football games. Also the Huge auditorium is haunted. Deep laughter in the balcony Also the Red Cross building is right behind the football field fence and it is about as old as the school, and is also said to be haunted by the original caretaker.

Jacques-André Istel, the mayor of Felicity, saw its barren wasteland when he was a Marine on his way to Korea. He got excited by the desert and, after the war, bought the land. Then he and his wife moved out here and began building their own town.
The idea of making Felicity the Center of the World came to Jacques-André when he'd been mayor only a few months. "People have always thought I was crazy," he says, shrugging, but he somehow convinced Imperial County, CA, to recognize his claim. Soon he had convinced the Institut Geographique National of France, General Dynamics Corporation, and The People's Republic of China to recognize it as well

Pioneertown,  CA : Near Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree is a movie set-turned-town. It was built in 1940s as a permanent set for movies. The shootout in Gunfight at the OK Corral was, uh, shot here and the corral is still here. People ended up moving in and now live in the houses. The exteriors are all intact, so it looks just like the old west of the movies. In fact, they still film commercials and movies here from time to time. There's a motel, a restaurant, a petting zoo, and even a real post office -- one that looks like it's out of the old west, of course. (Either turn off Rt 247 onto Pipes Canyon Rd or turn off Rt 62 onto Pioneertown Rd.)

Calistoga, CA : Just off of Hwy 29, between Clear Lake and Calistoga, visit Old Faithful of California. It's purported to be one of only three "faithful" geysers in the world. Admittedly, geysers are pretty cool. But, better still, the park also is home to a pack of Tennessee Fainting Goats.

The goat exhibit explains that said goats suffer (or benefit) from a rare genetic malady that causes their muscles to go rigid when the goats are frightened, thus causing the poor goatlets to fall over. They seem pretty accustomed to the geyser, and did not faint upon its eruption.

It was a weird and wonderful place. It's worth the $6 admission if you know what you want to get out of it

 Giant Donuts

Inglewood, Los Angeles, and La Puente,CA

There aren't many big doughnuts still standing -- in fact, maybe just these three in California, unsurprisingly revered by googie-eyed shutterbugs and pop culture pundits. What's nice about the attractions is that they continue to operate exclusively as doughnut bakeries, where you can still grab a bag of honey-glazed, jelly-filled happiness.

The big doughnut at Randy's Donuts, Inglewood, CA, is a few miles north of LAX Airport off the 405. Trees and brush obscure the freeway view more than they must have in 1953, when the Big Donut Drive-in chain opened. Once up the exit ramp and on the cross-street, the 22-foot diameter snack appears poised to roll off an otherwise uninspired drive-thru store.

Randy's is a destination with Hollywood star status. It appears over and over as movie backdrop or in obliquely angled atmospheric LA montages. The big doughnut needs a regular smog and soot scrub -- a black grime is caked across the top and settled around the texture nubbins. The neighborhood itself is a little grimy.

But.... the doughnuts baked at Randy's are fresh and tasty -- honey-glazed, chocolate drenched, and fat bearclaws acquired at the drive-thru window from friendly staff. Randy's sells souvenir hats, and a t-shirt featuring an illustration of the building.

About ten miles southeast of Randy's, west of the 110, stands Donut King II, which sports an identical though lesser known structure. It's been painted bright yellow with rough red lettering that reads "Donut King II."

Another vestige of the Big Donut chain is called Kindle's Donuts, on South Normandie Avenue and West Century Boulevard in LA.

Head east to La Puente to admire our final California doughnut landmark.

The Donut Hole in La Puente is more immersive for the car-bound than Randy's, since you can actually drive through its brown double-dunker portal. Its also a darling of film location scouts, since it sits conveniently within the "Zone."

The Donut Hole was built in 1968, the two hollow ends fashioned from fiberglass and spanning 26 feet. One of a chain of five doughnut shops, this is the one that has survived. Plunked down in a typical store-jammed suburbia, the Hole's digestive system is taxed as a stop-and-go stream of cars are gulped down and unceremoniously pooted out. The fresh-baked choices are arrayed within, trayed along interior windows. We recommend buying an assortment bag of orange topped, plain and glazed.

You can bolt them down on your way to either of two Muffler Man within easy striking distance, in El Monte or Whittier.

(Randy's Donuts: Inglewood, 805 W. Mancester Blvd. at La Cienega Blvd. 310-645-4707. Donut King: 2214 West El Segundo Boulevard, Gardena. Kindle's Donuts: 10003 S. Normandie Avenue, LA. 323-756-8548. The Donut Hole, La Puente, 15300 E. Amar Road at Hacienda Blvd. 626-968-2912)
